Our high school youth are always up to something. "Meetings" are the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, usually 7 - 8:30 PM, in the Youth Room. All high school youth are invited to participate in one, some or all events!
On 17 July 2010, eight St Paul youth spent a day with Fr Matthew Bueing, pastor at St Paul’s church in Ellicott City, MD. Starting with a 10am Mass, the day continued with a series of TV-type game shows produced by Fr Matt. They included “Deal or No Deal” and Jeopardy – all questions dealing with topics like, St Paul history, altar serving, and famous saints.
After the youth roared in sounds of “NO DEAL”, they were off to Westview Lanes for some duck-pin bowling. Having “bowled up an appetite”, the next stop was CiCi’s buffet in Catonsville. Following the “all you can eat” plates of pasta, salad and pizza, the youth headed out for their final adventure of the day.
Arriving at St Martin’s Nursing Home, Sister Lawrence greeted the group and led them to two wings of the Little Sister’s of the Poor facility. There the youth unloaded their treasure of ice cream and all the sundae toppings. Greeting each resident with a warm hello, the youth took ‘orders’ for a specialized ice cream sundae. After all shared in ice cream sundaes, each youth shared some time with the residences. Some youth helped the residents blow bubbles, listened to the residents tell stories – and some even learned how to play the card game “Rummy”! As time ran out for the visit, the youth offered handshakes and hugs to the residents. It was truly a great event, and our group was invited back…ice cream or not.
Before leaving St Martin’s, the youth gathered in the grotto as Fr Matt shared about vocations and challenged the youth to think about how God is calling them. It was a wonderful, fun day, as the youth returned to their families with story of their “Day with Fr Matt”.
Several members of our parish community joined 85 other youth and adults at the annual Baltimore City work camp, from 27 June – 3 July 2010. The theme for this year’s work camp was “Living Hope”. The work sites included helping in 15 private homes and one agency. The work in the homes ranged from cleaning, to painting, to replacing drywall, to pouring new concrete.
Work at St Peter’s Adult Learning Center included interior painting and creating a garden in the court yard area. All total, this group of 85 people donated 3,567 hours of their time helping others. Now – that’s community action!
Plan to join us again next year, for more exciting projects, fun, food, and prayer as we reach out to help others in need – creating “Living Hope”.
This annual event provides an intense week for high school youth - upcoming juniors - graduating seniors. This year, youth stay in five star accommodations, dine on gourmet lunches, and meet incredible people.
Actually, no - except for the meeting incredible people - that part is true. Youth reside in an adequate, safe, 'older' facility - and soon come to know their bed at home is certainly more comfortable than the air mattress. The gourmet food is more like cereal (and MAYBE) pop tarts for breakfast, PBJs and fruit for daily lunch, and a hot meal for dinner (honest).
Each day starts with prayer, a learning session - then lookout - it is time to explore Baltimore! If you think of Baltimore as ballgames and the Inner Harbor - you are in for an experience of a life time. JAW is about social justice - safe, affordable housing - for all people, adequate transportation, moving from homeless to homeowners, moving from receiving a meal to providing a meal. You will interface with the hungry, the homeless, the hurting - but never with the hopeless. See what the issues are, what our Church is doing - and how YOU can make a difference.
Social Justice is insuring the dignity of every human being
